Firstly, I hope that you never find yourself in need of making a workers compensation claim. However, if you haven’t been fortunate enough to avoid that circumstance, or you know someone who is in the midst of a claim, I might be able to offer you some solace here.

It’s good to know that the Western Australian workers compensation scheme is one of the best around, with a vast number of good people doing their level best to help you get where you need to be. It’s also good to know that almost every individual going through this process finds it challenging. This is really normal.

I have worked for one of Australia’s largest insurers and gained some valuable experience in this respect. And it was pleasing to discover just how many positive elements there are.

So, here are some tips for you, that might help you get through things;

  1. Make your priority about getting better, and recognise that a huge part of this involves getting back to work life.
  2. Recognise that you will at some stage feel out of control. So focus on the things that you can control.
  3. Form a good relationship with your Insurance Claim Manager. It will help you get what you need.
  4. Choose clinicians and service providers who know their stuff. It is your right to choose your providers.
  5. Make sure you are not being over-treated. Your management should be directed towards your independence early on.
  6. Keep active, make sure you sleep well and ask for help when you need it.
  7. Do your best to avoid adversarial situations.
